These patterns are actually telling the family history of the person. Some of these patterns going back for 2000 years. The Ta Moko (tattoo) is tapu (sacred) and not only restricted to males.

Wow! That is something interesting. So just by looking at the faces of the Maori people, and checking their tattoos, you could interpret his or her family history? Do they use a common tattoo pattern to represent their family history?

It's my first time to encounter such this thing. Ta Moko is another interesting fact about NZ. I wonder how people interpret those kind of art to know the history of a Maori person.

Mokos done with traditional tools hurt quite a lot apparently, in any case more than if done with a tattoo gun. At least that's what a maori friend of mine tells me
